Research & the Florida Brain Bank

The Florida Brain Bank supports collaborative research programs related to Alzheimer's disease and other degenerative disorders of the brain. Here are two examples of research projects that involve the Florida Brain Bank.

Dennis W. Dickson, M.D., at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, explores the changes in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease at autopsy. The primary focus of his research on aging is the characterization of brains of individuals who had been longitudinally evaluated during life through their participation in the Florida Brain Bank program (see microscopic image below). For more information about this research please see:

Ranjan Duara, M.D., is the Medical Director of the Wien Center for Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorders at Mt. Sinai's Medical Center in Miami Beach, and in the Departments of Medicine and Psychiatry, University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. He is involved in a number of projects that utilize the Brain Bank. For example, Dr. Duara's research group explores the predictors of the rate of cognitive decline in elderly subjects. His work has a particular focus on the rate of decline among Hispanic and non-Hispanic elderly. For more information about this research please see:
