TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – On Tuesday, December 5, 2023, the Department of Elder Affairs’ team and all of Florida’s Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) joined senior volunteers from every region in the state to recognize International Volunteer Day – a day the Department dedicated to serving cherished seniors in Florida’s communities.

“We are truly grateful to spend a day in collective service, alongside our caring volunteers and partners to ensure seniors in our state stay warm and comfortable this winter,” said Department of Elder Affairs Secretary Michelle Branham. “Together, we helped over 1,100 seniors have a brighter and cozier holiday season.”

Each of the 11 Area Agencies packed over 100 plastic totes of essential items to be delivered to vulnerable, older adults across Florida. The totes contained approximately in winter necessities, such as space heaters, non-slip socks, soup, lotion, gloves, blankets, and more. As one of Florida’s smaller state agencies, volunteerism plays a vital role for the Department in connecting more seniors across the state with essential support.
